We spoke with Paolo Sodini about SHoF's first 15 years, the importance of independent research, and his ambitions for the future.

What does this appointment mean to you?

It brings me back to the days when we created SHoF—the management committee, the Data Center, and the feeling that we were building something new and important.

Looking back on SHoF's first 15 years, what achievements or milestones stand out to you?

The creation of a platform where business, policymakers, and researchers can come together, guided by facts and scientific evidence. Another important achievement has been the opportunity to attract and connect with some of the world's leading experts and brightest minds in finance and economics.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for SHoF as Director?

We have come a long way, but it is time to think about SHoF 3.0. I strongly believe that independence and objectivity are crucial to long-term welfare and societal development. There is much more that a platform like SHoF can contribute to this direction.

What role do you see SHoF playing during this period of economic uncertainty?

To be a strong, steady, and independent voice against populism and divisiveness.

Is there any current research you are particularly excited about?

I am passionate about household welfare and how financial markets affect it. Sweden has exceptional data that allow us to study this broad field of research, and SHoF can help researchers make the most of this unique resource.

Why does financial economics matter, and why is SHoF important?

Financial economics studies how financial markets function and how they affect economic welfare. Well-functioning financial markets are essential to allocating capital, managing risk, supporting economic growth, and improving household welfare. SHoF plays a vital role by fostering rigorous, relevant, and impactful research that advances our understanding of these markets and helps address the challenges they face.

Why is it important to communicate research? What impact can it have?

Research can only have impact if it is accessible. By communicating research clearly and effectively, SHoF helps translate academic insights into the possibility of creating better-informed policy, practice, and public debate.
